Ace is the place with the helpful Juncos

This sweet Dark-eyed Junco spent its breeding season in the greenhouse of our local Ace Hardware. It made a quaint little nest in a pot of flowers. The helpful folks at Ace made a little sign and kept the nest safe , but this Junco wasn’t worried about people. She would land just feet from you if you went in and just watch you.

She mastered finding her way in and out of the greenhouse without using the main entry way. Observing her back and forth in and out feeding the babies, it was apparent she was a good experienced momma Junco. Those babies were in a very safe spot, protected by the employees and up and away from any predators. In many ways this was a masterful nest location.

I admire the ability of this Junco to coexist with people so well, in some ways better than I do! Breeding season is mostly over now around here and the birds are quiet.

Among the buzzing of insects and the faint chips of avian life, it’s August in Upstate New York. Some birds still busy with fledging young but most birds are done breeding altogether. As they prepare for migration or winter in New York , I guess we are all doing the same thing. Most of staying here, some migrating south for the Winter months.

Another breeding season complete.
